Samuel Cooke was an American singer, songwriter, and businessman who is often called the "King of Soul". He started his career in gospel with the 1950s group the Soul Stirrers, electrifying audiences with his soaring vocals. Cooke later left gospel to record rhythm and blues with the support of producer Bumps Blackwell. He was a savvy businessman who established his own record label and publishing company, SAR, and fought to own the rights to his music.
