INXS (a phonetic play on "in excess"^[4]) were an Australian rock band, formed in 1977 in Sydney.^[5][6] Originally called the Farriss Brothers, founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly.^[7] For 20 years, INXS were fronted by Hutchence, whose stage presence made him the focal point of the band.^[5][7] Initially known for their new wave/ska-pop style, the band then developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements.^[5]

With grunge and alternative music breaking into the mainstream, INXS tried to establish a new direction for itself, incorporating sitars, a 60-piece orchestra, and a much more "raw" sound to their music. In its four-star review of the album, Q called it "... a far more engaging and heartfelt collection than anything the group has put out in recent memory ... It rocks," and listed it as one of the 50 Best Albums of 1992.
